Maricel Museum
Curator: Ignasi Domènech, head of Sitges Museum Collections
In 1891, faced with the impact of the Universal Exhibition of 1888 and the new cultural currents, Barcelona inaugurated the Museum of Reproductions as a bet by the city to assemble a collection that reproduced examples of the history of art and that was accessible to the general population. Since 1935, a large part of these works have been part of the collections of the Sitges Museums, some of which are exhibited to the public in different spaces, such as the Palau de Maricel.
With the aim of projecting this collection, Museus de Sitges has scheduled an exhibition, which will be held on the ground floor of the Museu de Maricel and which will present a tour through various areas of art history, with the exhibition of pieces such as glass arts, ceramics, enamel, iron, porcelain, sculpture, mosaic or furniture, among others, created from the reproductions of masterpieces of each of these areas.
